Helmholtz-Zentrum GmbH (Hereon)
The focus of the research at the Institute of Membrane Research are membranes for applications in gas and liquid phase separation. Due to the interdisciplinary integration of material sciences and engineering, our research covers the full spectrum from basic research to industrial application. The latest equipment and methods for the synthesis, characterization and processing of polymers, as well as for membrane preparation, module development and design, and modelling of separation processes substantiate our competence in the field of polymer science and membranes.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum GmbH (Hereon) is one of 18 members of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, Germany’s largest science organisation. Hereon is located in Geesthacht near Hamburg with branches in Teltow near Berlin, Garching near Munich and in Hamburg, with a total staff of approximately 1100 employees, including more than 650 scientists, engineers and technicians.
Hereon’s scientific spectrum encompasses high-performance materials, processes and environmentally friendly technologies for mobility and new energy systems. Furthermore, research is conducted on biomaterials for medicine and for increasing the quality of life. Through research and consulting, Hereon addresses the challenges of climate change in a solution-oriented manner and facilitates sustainable management as well as the protection of the coasts and marine environment through comprehensive scientific understanding. From basic understanding to practical applications – the interdisciplinary research center covers a unique spectrum.. Hereon comprises fourteen research institutes and the Climate Service Centre Germany (GERICS).
Hereon is committed to the principles of the European Research Area by providing excellent science to support both solving Europe’s societal challenges and further developing Europe’s innovation potential. Hereon holds more than 650 patents in various areas. Hereon maintains its own technology transfer support department which provides services to Hereon researchers covering e.g. protection of intellectual property, licensing, and support to spin-off.
Hereon has gained experience for years and has cultivated a successful tradition in both the co-ordination of and participation in different types of EU projects. Since the year 2000, researchers at HZG have coordinated some 45, and have participated in more than 150 EU projects co-financed by the European Commission.
